“move”と”relocate”の違い

move：引っ越す

move は友人との会話など、日常生活で「引っ越す」と言うときに使います。

• I’m moving to Tokyo next month.
  （来月、東京に引っ越します。）
• We moved into a new house last year.
  （私たちは去年、新しい家に引っ越しました。）
• She moved from Osaka to Kyoto.
  （彼女は大阪から京都に引っ越しました。）

relocate: 転居する

relocate は「移転する」「転居する」「移動させる」という意味で、人・会社・施設などを別の場所へ移すときに使います。move と比較するとややフォーマルな表現です。

• We decided to relocate to Tokyo for work.
  （仕事のために東京へ引っ越すことにしました。）
• She relocated to New York after getting a new job.
  （彼女は新しい仕事に就いた後、ニューヨークへ引っ越しました。）
• Would you be willing to relocate for this position?
  （この仕事のために転居していただくことは可能ですか？）
• He relocated from Osaka to Kyoto last year.
  （彼は昨年、大阪から京都へ引っ越しました。）

relocate: 会社・オフィスなどが移転する

• The company is planning to relocate its headquarters to Singapore.
  （その会社は本社をシンガポールに移転する計画です。）
• Our office has been relocated to a larger building.
  （私たちのオフィスは、より大きなビルに移転しました。）
• The restaurant relocated to a new location downtown.
  （そのレストランは中心街の新しい場所へ移転しました。）

relocate: 人・物を「移動させる」

• The museum relocated several paintings to a more secure room.
  （その美術館は数点の絵画をより安全な部屋へ移しました。）
• The animals were relocated to a protected area.
  （その動物たちは保護区域へ移されました。）

よく使われる表現

• relocate to + 場所
  → ～へ転居・移転する
  We’re relocating to California.
  （私たちはカリフォルニアへ移転します。）
• relocate from A to B
  → AからBへ移転する
  The company relocated from London to Dublin.
  （その会社はロンドンからダブリンへ移転しました。）

たとえば、求職活動中のビジネス英語では、Are you willing to relocate?（転居する意思はありますか？）という表現が出てきます。ここでは単なる「引っ越す」よりも、仕事のために別の都市・地域へ転居するというニュアンスです。
