“aftermath” ってどういう意味？

aftermath は、「（災害・事故・戦争・事件などの）余波、後遺症、その後の影響」という意味です。特に、大きな出来事の後に残る問題や影響について話すときによく使われます。

aftermath の語源は？

aftermath は、もともと「災害の後」という意味ではなく、農業に由来する言葉です。

語源

aftermath = after + math

ここでの math は mathematics（数学）の math とは関係ありません。

古英語の mæð に由来し、「刈ること／刈り取った草」という意味でした。これは mow（草を刈る） と同じ語源です（さらに詳しく：etymonline）。

そのため、もともとの aftermath は、

after + math
→ 「最初に草を刈った後に、もう一度生えてくる草」
→ 「二番草、刈った後の再生草」

という意味でした。

どうして「余波」という意味になった？

そこから比喩的に、

ある出来事の後に残るもの・生じるもの

という意味で使われるようになり、現在では特に災害・戦争・事故・事件などの後に残る影響や結果を指すようになりました。
